Review This Game

What could be cooler than flying around space in your own ship, battling pirates, gathering supplies and generally exploring unc...harted new territories? Well it seems developer 2 Person Games has realised this too and opted to create their own take on this sci-fi setting. Space Salvager takes on the viewpoint of a top down space shooter. The player travels around the constellation Nyr Heim which itself is comprised of over eighty different sectors set in a constantly unfolding open world (or space rather). You’ll find yourself shooting pirates, mining asteroids, salvaging wrecks and generally exploring the unknown. What’s so fantastic about Space Salvager is that you can do what you like, how you like, when you like. There is no linear path, rather you’re given the tools to explore and it’s up to you how and when you use them. The main aim of the game is to gather your fortune and generally keep out of harm’s way. While mining asteroids and salvaging wrecks will net you some healthy supplies, you’ll also need to be weary of enemies eager to shoot you down. Fortunately to help you on your way you’re able to level up and upgrade your ship in a number of ways. You can improve shields and armour which proves especially handy when battling enemies. You can opt for an engine change which helps to improve speed and manoeuvrability or you can upgrade weapons that suit your attack style. Of course there are a wealth of options that help make your ship feel unique to you. The more metal and resources you gather, the more you can alter even changing a ship’s a mass and hull integrity. While playing with a keyboard works fine, Space Salvager also supports gamepad use which is by far the more comfortable of the two. Space Salvager feels a little rough around the edges when it comes to spit and polish. Sound effects tend to feel a little off at times and the while the visuals are simple and clear, the lack of any major effects may turn away those looking for a game with a little more pizzazz. That’s not what Space Salvager is about though, and the simplistic emptiness of space works perfectly here making you really feel like a tiny ship in an endless ocean. Unfortunately the multiplayer also still needs some work. This shouldn’t be a problem for much longer however with the developer making it clear there will be future updates, fixes and extra content further down the line. While Space Salvage may be simple in its execution of creating an open world in space for you to explore, the feeling of desperately salvaging and doing what you can to survive comes across brilliantly as you mine, battle and out build your way to a fortune.
